PERFECT BODY vs. BODY PERFECT: An Encouraging Note for Body Image
Our society is awesome at drowning us in the notion that the "perfect body" is not only something that’s expected of us but is also something that’s attainable. A couple months ago, I was taking a pleasant little nature walk up north, looking for the perfect instagrammable leaf. After walking around, leafless, for a good 10 minutes, I realized that I had painted this predispositioned picture of the "perfect leaf" in my mind. There were none to be found as even the seemingly "perfect" leaves were discolored or dismembered somewhere. The perfect leaf was not attainable.
What if I told you that perfection will never be attainable for our bodies either? Would you believe me? Honestly, I wouldn't even believe myself. We could lose 10 more pounds, and it won't ever feel like enough. We could gain 10 more pounds, and it won't ever feel like enough. We question the value of our spiritual being daily based on the nature of our physical being.
We stare at our stretch marks, muffin tops, and scars in disgust — forgetting that Jesus had scars too, and he wore them proudly.
“'Peace be with you… Put your finger here; see my [scarred] hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe,'” Jesus said to his disciple Thomas after his resurrection (John 20:26-27 NIV).
Listen: the perfect body is not attainable because nothing that doesn't exist can be attainable. Yes, that's right. You have probably heard it before, but I’m reminding you again. Society's idea about the "perfect body" doesn't exist. Even Christ, who was innately perfect, had scars.
You know what does exist, though? A body perfect —
— A body perfect for fulfilling your God-bestowed purpose on earth.
— A body perfect for creating, producing, reproducing, adventuring, and breathing life.
— A body perfect for being a mother, a wife, a sister, a worker, and a friend.
— A body perfect for passion, for peace, for hunger, for thirst, for satisfaction and contentment, for worship, and for revival.
You have a body perfect for life. Consistently remind yourself of this today. Stop doubting and believe!
